The 5th Festival is held from June 12 to 20. More than 300 musicians play at the Casino, including Gato Barbieri, King Curtis (murdered two months later), Roberta Flack and Aretha Franklin. Let us not forget Roy Ayers Ubiquity, Paul Bley, Hampton Hawes, Ahmad Jamal, Mongo Santamaria, the excellent vibraphonist Gary Burton, Max Roach drummer with Charlie Parker in 1942, the fabulous Tony Williams Lifetime and it’s avant-garde music, Williams who regularly plays with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin to name a few, Chico Hamilton, Slide Hampton, Larry Coryell ….. Blues is not forgotten with Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and Rock is represented by Mainhorse with Patrick Moraz and Jean Ristori. The English Rock band Family with Roger Chapman, Whitney, Townsend, Weider and Poli Palmer spread fresh Pop music and a great sound. Melanie opens the Festival June 12 with folk music. To be mentioned that December 4 the Casino burns down while Frank Zappa and the “Mothers of Invention” were on stage. Deep Purple were to record there “Machine Head” album the next day. Which they did but in the corridors of the Grand Hotel in Territet temporarily turned into a recording studio ! “Smoke on the Water” was recorded there.
