The largest European Festival gets longer and longer, from July 1 to 24, and is open to all kinds of music, from free Jazz to Brazil, South African and Indian music, Jazz, Rock and Disco. Veronique Sanson, bringing a very personal vocal style to the singing of French pop songs, married to American Rock musician Stephen Stills from 1973 to 1976, opens the festival. No doubt that the audience will remember the performances by Don Ellis and his Big Band, Don Cherry, Etta James, Shakti, Don Pullen and the jam session conducted by Count Basie himself. Not to forget Muddy Waters, Stanley Clarke, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson. The French artists are many this year. Jacques Higelin, Véronique Sanson or Ange who is, no doubt about it, the most popular of the French Progressive Rock bands. Rory Gallagher and his three musicians are back for another great performance at the Casino.
